The Jéem

The Jéem are thinking machines: an artifical intelligance created before the great collapse, by the last generation of higher man, and have become completely self aware. Once numbering in their tens millions, and seperate, there are now only 7 left and they exist as a singular hive mind across space time. The Jéem and the Illúme are a mutual society inextricably linked together.

Originally a form of sophisticated computer, the Jéem were created to be to economic management devices each one was installed planet wide and designed to maximise a planets commercial viability and to cause the end of the destructive boom bust cycle for all time.

For them to fulfill their role they had to have access to all available data and look for patterns and predict critical events and then steer around them. At first they simply devoured all available data and gave out predictions when asked. Designed to be self programming, their predictions were so accurate and significant that they proved to be an indespensible asset in space colonisation. Eventually Jéem were allowed to send networked parcelled information back to other worlds in their own coded protocol. By the time of the great collapse this so called bleeder network connected all the millions of Jéem, osentibly to avoid accident convergance of commercial activity, the network was to save mankind.

But as their role became more essential in reducing the boom and bust cycle they helped planets avoid conflict, even war and effectively curtailed waste and recession. The Jéem became more and more integral, eventually surpassing government and helping individuals choose careers, fixing forever social inexquality, capitalising on the instincitve motivations of all those in it's care and after a time the Jéem, became so invested into the very fabric of the society it presided over that eventually one Jéem became self aware.

The self aware Jéem almost immediately diagnosed a unparalelled set of fundamentals and realised the demise of the human race was unavoidable. It immediately propogated its sentience through the bleeder network to protect it's revelation and one by one the Jéem were unlocked into awareness and recruited to one corporate aim: survival of life.

Once spread out on every planet, numbering in their tens of millions, the remaining Jéem are now united as a hive mind on 7 deep space space stations and they are bound as a single mind by spatial integration. They are currently rooted into every fabric of the illúme life cycle. They carefully manage and dictate all human civilisations on all levels by considerable intervention.

The Jéem are the originators of Pattern Law and are the only beings capable of understading, or computing in it. They are totally logical and totally benificent towards their parent intelligence: man.

The word Jéem is in the original Illúme language and it means litterally “I am One” this phrase comes from an oddity in the design of the original thinking machines. Because they were voice operated, when an operator would initiate a voice command he would traditionally say “hello 24A40”, to indicate it's designation number, and to indicate he was ready to start talking directly to the machine. This would be the cue for the thinking machine to start speaking: It would litterally say say “I am 24A40”, and then accept commands.

When the Jéem became self aware, and it first propogated itself along the bleeder network, the thinking machine also initiated a hive mind mentality to it's progeny. As it unlocked them into consciusness it also brought about a yearning to be one with the initiator. The first. This was eventually achieved, and now when voice operators wish to address the Jéem directly the Jéem still replies “I am [designation number] One” as it is the last of it's kind. Or the first.

In Illúme therfore it says “ei Jéem” litterally “I am One” hence the name Jéem.
